Whaleship Essex (the whaling vessel that inspired Herman Melville's, Moby Dick) is a quick to play, solo,  rpg-lite game that pits you against the elements.

You and 2 shipmates have just been shipwrecked by a whale. Like the actual sailors in 1820 that experienced this first hand, you must traverse the ocean with a limited supply of rations. Weather, whales and some good luck will determine your fate. If you find yourself in dire straits you always have the option to "draw lots" to see who will be required to sacrifice for the survival of the crew. Face impossibly difficult choices like the brave sailors were forced to 200 years ago.

For additional historical context consider reading Nathaniel Philbrick's "In the Heart of the Sea" or watch Ron Howards film adaptation. Both are well done.

Only requires d6 to play. 3d6 recommended, with one being used to track rations.  Like actually being stranded in the ocean, this game can turn quickly! Never assume you're safe. You are always a just few rolls from total party knock out.

Games can be completed in as little as 5-10 minutes. Of the 20 sailors that left Nantucket only 9 arrived home. Like them it's likely at least one of you will make it out alive. The challenge is getting everyone home safe.

ADULT THEMES are part of this game. This game involves making decisions that could result in your character starving to death, witnessing the death of a friend, choosing a friend to sacrifice and cannibalism.

This is so cool! Well crafted and a very good idea! I've printed it and it's great. I must admit that I don't understand well the starving mechanism : do one of your companion die as soon as you have 0 ration?

Thanks for this very good work!

Hi there! Thanks! So the starvation mechanism is basically once you have zero rations, you get three more "ration adjustments" until you all starve. So let's say you have no rations left, then you roll a ration check and lose two rations, that is one ration adjustment. You roll again, do a ration check, you lose 1 ration, that is your second ration adjustment. A third ration check and you lose 1 ration, that is your THIRD and final ration adjustment. You are all dead.  If you had managed to get a ration during any of those turns, that "three ration adjustment" countdown would reset. If you need any more clarification just let me know! Lots of rules to fit on a business card so I had to be really terse.

Ah yes! This clarify the starvation system a lot, I understand it now. As a non native English speaker some rules are sometimes hard to understand in TTRPGs. I'm currently reading your other game Crossfox, seems fantastic! I'm amazed by your creativity!

Thanks a lot!
