v1.4 Combat Refinements and more

After a great initial release, I have been getting feedback on numerous items. The biggest issue was the sheer amount of rolling required to successfully complete combat. Combat has been adjusted to lower the number of rolls and adds mechanics to allow for more agency during combat. Another issue involved the usefulness of stamina. Version 1.4 enhances stamina use by providing the ability to adjust outcome rolls and gain advantages during combat.

Version 1.4 adjusts the following:

Casual Mode

The initial game included an encounter table that gave each predator an equal chance of appearing using a d8. Version 1.4 adds a "casual" column that allows you to determine your opponents using a d20.

Smaller Map

To help with faster solo gameplay, a smaller hex map is included. Instead of a d12 x d20 size grid a smaller, d6 x d12 map is also included.

Refined Battle System

Previous versions included "Defense Dice" which gave each animal a static amount of defense dice to roll when you attacked them. For instance if you, as a Crossfox, landed one successful hit on a bear, it would still roll 4d6 as defense dice. This led to ALOT of rolling and many rounds of combat where nothing happened.

The refined system only requires that you roll a d6 for each successful hit. For instance if you attack a Cougar, and land 2 successful hits, the Cougar only rolls TWO d6 in defense. The same applies to you as the Crossfox. If a bear lands 1 successful hit, you only roll 1 d6 in defense. As with previous versions, a successful hit or defensive move requires rolling at or above the animal's power.

Adjustment Costs and Stamina Use

Some feedback was that there should be more player control over their fate. Version 1.4 allows for the use of stamina in new ways.

To adjust outcomes:

  • You can use stamina to increase rolls on outcome tables, with one stamina raising the roll by 1.

To assist in combat:

Each predator now has an “adjustment cost” which allows you to spend stamina to gain an advantage.  Spend stamina equal to the predator's adjustment cost to:

  • Add two extra attack dice (for a total of 5)
  • Negate one wound during combat.

For Example: You have 6 stamina and encounter a Cougar. You may spend the Cougar’s associated Adjustment Cost to roll 5 total attack dice once. Alternatively, you could spend 5 stamina to remove a wound you receive during combat.

Losing Stamina When it's Depleted

Losing stamina when you have none now requires rolling an encounter check (1 or 2 on a d6) and again for each new hex you enter.

More Powerful Bears

Added 1 attack dice to Grizzly Bears, for more danger when you happen on one.

Booklet Printing

Adjusted the pages to make it more easily printed as a booklet using Adobe Acrobat.
